3. FIREWALLS Part IV

What is it you seek protection from?

Many do not stop and think when they buy a firewall.

Why so?

What is it you are trying to protect yourself from?

Is it,

* Virus
* Hackers
* Trojans
* Spam
* Someone stealing your credit card number
* your children viewing sex related websites and you wish to
block that.

Or something else.

To give you a hint on how complex this is, read the
following.

Virus = Antivirus Software
Hackers = Firewall Refusing connections from internet-->
your computer (and security)
Trojans = Refusing access to internet for certain software
already inside your computer.
Spam = Special email software or rule-based email software.
CC num stealth = Encrypted connections online (Https, vpn, pgp
and similar).
Block Websites = Some firewalls can block certain urls. There is
also some control made by changing the
security settings in your browser. Neither is
completely working or 100% working.

As you can see may not a firewall solve your specific problem. But it will reduce the risks in general and it do block out the most common attacks from other people on internet trying to get into your computer.

4. What is a Name Server?

Have you ever heard about something called DNS?

DNS is commonly used for Domain Name Services in computer literature, and this services can be found on a NS (Name Server).

What is the purpose of a NS?
----------------------------
A name server is a server where internet domains are born!
(Note. Do not confuse a Microsoft Windows Domain and an Internet Domain).

When you register a domain name, will someone, somewhere enter your new domain name into a NS. They will also enter something that is called a NS record. This people are the "owners" of the top domains or one of their representatives.

The NS record looks something like this.

kndata.com NS xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx... is an ip address).

The Name Server with ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx will then be the Name Server that is responsible for knowing all of your domain information (like hosts. The registration information ,SOA record will be found in the first Names Server).

In "your NS" will things like this be entered,

www.kndata.com A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
mail.kndata.com MX xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The A is called an A record (imagine!). And is a direct translation from a name to an ip address.

The MX is called, you guessed it. A MX (Mail eXchange) record. And it answers the requests for what server handles your emails.
