Marketing, what is it?
Marketing is most often used as the business activity
of presenting products or services to potential customers in such a way
as to make them eager to buy.
Other words used like synonyms for marketing are advertising,
promotion and selling.
Product marketing or promotion
There is a distinct difference between promoting a product
and promoting a service. When you market or promote your product, you
will have to transfer the feeling of owning the product to the buyer.
Placing it in their hands, their home or in their computer.
Add to this the feelings of pleasure, joy, calmness
and other positive feelings the buyer will have, once he/she have made
the purchase.
The follow-up is the benefits after buying. Often when
selling products, the benefits shown to the customer are directly connected
to the pain it will remove. Problems, workload, lack of knowledge and
so on.
Marketing or promoting a service
In contrast to the direct owning of a product, the service
goes the other way around. Here you point out the benefits of not having
what you have purchased in your possession. Paint the picture of pleasure
your customer will have from not having the “service” installed
in his/her computer. Other people run it, they support it, and they make
it work and so on.
Marketing or promotion
The usage of the words marketing and promotion can be
quite different. Promotion has a multitude of usages like,
1. Advancement in position - human resources and advancement
to a more senior job or a higher rank, grade, or position.
2. Something that promotes - business something that is designed to promote
or advertise a product, cause, or organization.
3. Encouragement for activity - encouragement for the growth or development
of something.
4. Advance into a higher division - sports advance by a national sports
team into a higher international group.
5. In chess (believe it or not) - the act of exchanging a pawn for a more
powerful piece, usually a queen, when it reaches an opponent’s end
of the board.
